Goa Chief Minister and BJP Leader Manohar Parrikar passed away on 17th March 2019, after battling a prolonged disease of Pancreatic Cancer. He was the fourth time Goa Chief Minister and a former Defence Minister. He was first hospitalised in February 2018 in Mumbai. He even travelled to the United States for a treatment there.
Parrikar, however, pulled through and steered the Goa government for five months after that and attended recent public events with a tube in his nose. He even presented the state budget in January this year, looking weak, with the tube.
The death of the chief minister, a metallurgical engineer from the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay, will leave the BJP with a huge leadership vacuum that it may struggle to fill in the coastal state. Parrikar was the only BJP leader to be able to keep the party’s patchwork coalition government, comprising the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party, Goa Forward Party and independents, in Goa afloat. The Centre has announced March 18 (Monday) as a national mourning day following Parrikar’s demise and a state funeral will also be accorded to Parrikar. Many prominent Government leaders as well as industry experts showed their grief towards him. Twitter was full of such news. Some of them are as follows.
