19/4/2019 0 Comments Cycling: An interest or necessity?Claims have been made that people in India relate cycling with a low class man's forceful need, but is it true? The oldest form of transportation has to come back to the millennials again. With the economy booming and people becoming self-aware of their social outlook, the sale of new and expensive cars to flaunt their money has become a trend. The sale of luxury and premium cars would be minimised only if the temperature of India wasn’t so hot because of the tropics and if the trend wasn’t such. Riding a bicycle is then a tedious job but is promoted more and more because of air pollution in India.
In past 10 years, the number of obese people has doubled in the country, according to the National Family Health Survey. As per the survey conducted by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, people having Body Mass Index (BMI) more than 25 kilogram per metre square have been considered as obese. With obesity taking a toll in the country, a healthier option of cycling has been introduced near the metro station bus points to travel on a cycle. Alexi Grewal is the only Indian origin American cyclist to win an Olympic gold medal in the men’s road race event, at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. He believes that people can take to cycling here, but it is complicated because in India a cycle is considered a poor man’s conveyance, something that is done out of force not interest. Thus, it is not seen as a popular means of transportation. There are campaigns like #30daysofbiking in Minnesota, United states of America which have influenced a lot of complete newbies to give transportation cycling a try, while at the same time long-time daily bike commuters are just as excited to sign on. 30 Days of Biking is simply an online pledge that says you are committed to ride your bike every day in the 30 days of April. India needs a campaign of this sort which can bring people on their foot to complete an assignment like this. But with the growing need for losing weight and being healthy or fit, cycling to your workplace is something to be considered. If not to save the environment, do it to save money, lose weight and be healthy! -Muskaan Bhatia
