The Lok Sabha elections are around the corner. The day of voting is a declared a public holiday, so people prefer to go out with their families and celebrate their day off with their families instead of going out and voting for their representatives. They take it as a vacation day.
However, different states are using different strategies to motivate and encourage the people to vote. There are various different campaigns to spread awareness about the people’s right to vote. One of the major problem faced during the elections is to get people to the polling booths. Many Karnataka primary and secondary schools have taken an initiative to encourage the parents to vote. In this initiative the students will get extra marks if the parents of the students vote for the upcoming Lok Sabha election 2019. A similar initiative was taken by them in the assembly elections held last year and also in the assembly elections held in 2013 but there was a restriction to a particular school. All the parents have to do is to visit the respective schools and inform the authority and confirm that they have voted. They have to show the ink mark on their finger. However, they can show the ink mark embedded on any day before the ink mark fades. The association of primary and secondary schools have asked all the member schools to inform the parents about this initiative by sending SMS or emails. General secretary of Associated Management of Primary and Secondary Schools in Karnataka D. Shashi Kumar feels that the parents are emotional about their ward’s marks. The unique incentive to provide additional marks becomes necessary as each vote is important and everyone should cast their vote, it is their right. The public took to twitter and shared their opinions about the initiative pointing out their like and dislike for the system.
