Charminar, an historical monument and mosque is a symbol of the city, Hyderabad. It is a global icon of the place and one of the recognized structures of the country. The word “Charminar” has originated from two different words- char meaning four and minar meaning pillar. The mosque comprises of four pillars stating the name Charminar.
However, recently, part of one of the pillars of the mosque fell down. The incident took place on Wednesday night and further raised questions about the structural balance and integrity of the famous mosque.
This Charminar is a 428 years old structure and had eroded over time which, according to ASI (Archaeological Survey of India) Archaeologists, is the reason of this mishap. People have started questioning whether the old and heritage monuments like this could stand the erosions or the history of others will also fall down like the Charminar’s. The Charminar area sees a thousand of tourists and locals on a daily basis. Due to this, the area around this popular tourist place is shut down for the general public by the police and large number of people gathered around the spot. The archaeologists say that this is not the only time they have seen a damage to the structure. Earlier, they have spotted a few cracks on the structure which they think happened because of the water logging during heavy rainfall and winds. They even agree to the fact that the monument had undertaken some restoration work some time ago as well. The fall of a heritage icon has created a panic among the people. According to the ASI archaeologists, the repair work of the monument will begin shortly.
